Antique Carved Vegetable Ivory Tape Measure Ivory Knob
This is a wonderful little Victorian antique sewing item. It is from the late 19th Century (1850-1890). The Tape Measure is turned and hand carved. The knob to turn the measuring tape is ivory. The base has a removable cap on the bottom. The red measuring tape is intact – all 18 plus inches of it is there – and clearly marked in black every inch.
Vegetable ivory is actually the coquille nut or tagua nut, which dries hard and gains a wonderful patina with age. Most of these sewing pieces came from Asia in the last half of the 1800s.
This tape measure is in excellent condition, with no issues that I can see. It measures about 1 7/8 inches tall and 1 inch in diameter.
